What Is Taekwondo
Taekwondo is a multifaceted martial art forged by Korean masters throughout the 1940s–60s. Emerging from ancient Korean traditions and influences from across Asia, it quickly became a symbol of resilience and hope for the Korean people during times of oppression. It provided them with a form of protection that no one could take away: their feet and hands.
Today, Taekwondo stands as a powerful and dynamic martial art that helps practitioners build both physical strength and mental resilience. The art combines self-defense techniques with the development of the inner discipline, making it a holistic path to personal growth.
The History of Taekwondo – From Korea to the World
Taekwondo originated in Korea, with its roots tracing back over 2,000 years. It evolved from earlier Korean martial arts, such as Taekkyon. Officially recognized as “Taekwondo” in the 20th century, it was established to unite various martial art styles and offer a structured path for students to follow.
With its strong kicking techniques and powerful strikes, Taekwondo is now practiced globally and has gained international recognition for its precision, speed, and dynamic movements.
At West Coast Taekwondo, we continue to honor the rich history of Taekwondo, blending traditional practices with modern training techniques to provide an authentic martial arts experience.
The word “Taekwondo” is derived from three Korean words:
- “Tae’ means to strike or break with the foot.
- “Kwon” means to strike or break with the hand.
- “Do” means the way or path, symbolizing a journey of personal growth.
Together, “Taekwondo” represents “the way of the foot and fist.” It is more than just learning self-defense; it promotes mental and ethical development, guiding students on a journey that fosters physical prowess, self-discipline, and character building.
The values of Taekwondo and the community it builds unite people of all ages and backgrounds. From preschoolers to parents and grandparents, Taekwondo instills respect for others, confidence, and self-control while providing a productive outlet for energy. The do-jang (training hall) has always been a safe haven and emotional second home, a place where practitioners find purpose and strength
Taekwondo is a “hard” martial art that involves standing, striking, and using lots of kicks and punches. Practitioners develop strength, agility, and speed, which allows them to execute fast and high kicks. These powerful techniques are the hallmark of Taekwondo, making it distinct from other martial arts.
At West Coast Taekwondo, we practice an older, traditional style and follow the Chang-Hun “Blue Cottage” forms. These forms emphasize balance, precision, and power in every movement. The main focus of Taekwondo is combining these physical techniques with mental discipline and self-control.
Like any martial art, the journey to mastering Taekwondo takes time, commitment, and patience. The process of moving through the Taekwondo belt system varies depending on the student’s dedication and consistency in training.
Achieving the rank of Taekwondo Master takes at least 19 years of focused effort, demanding hard work and lifelong discipline. Along the way, students grow through continuous learning, personal development, and the pursuit of excellence.
Each student’s journey is unique, but with a structured program every student is provided with the support and guidance needed to reach their potential.
